FIFE FOLK MUSEUM GRAND RE-OPENING

In the summer of 2020, Fife Folk Museum was contacted by Edward and Patrick Playfair, grandsons of Jack Playfair and Marjorie Armour-Hannay who were founder members of Fife Folk Museum. They were offering the Museum a large collection of beautiful items belonging to the Playfair family which the Trust were delighted to accept.
For the 2022 season commencing Friday April 1st we are proud to present an Exhibition of many of these items.
John [Jack] Maxwell Playfair, 1898-1983, enjoyed a varied career. He was educated at Fettes and at the Royal College of Music. After training with Edinburgh University OTC, he served in WW1 as a Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery. In the British advance of 1918 he saw particularly severe fighting.
After the War, he became a prep school master at Banstead Hall, Surrey, later a market gardener in Coldstream, Berwickshire, and finally a county councillor in Fife (Vice Convener of the Education Committee). He was Provost of Elie, where he then lived, from 1948 to 1959.
He was an accomplished pianist and organist, a keen gardener and a competent golfer who won the Royal & Ancient Golf Club’s Calcutta Cup in 1921. He married Marjory Armour-Hannay and had two sons. Latterly they lived at Baltilly, Ceres. Jack was an elder of the Kirk, governor of schools, and Chairman of the Central Fife Preservation Trust.
Jack & Marjory are commemorated as founder members with a plaque in the Museum. They are buried in Cupar cemetery.
Marjory Jean Playfair-Hannay of Kinsmuir MBE, 1901-1983, was the only daughter of S.B. Armour of Dalgairn, Cupar Fife, Sheriff-Subtitute of Fife and Kinross, and his wife Anne Armour-Hannay of Kingsmuir, Dunino, Fife.
She was a devoted supporter of the countryside and rural life and was local President of the Lifeboat Association, Fife President of the Red Cross, and Federation President of the Scottish Womens’ Rural Institutes.
Twice she was Vice Chairman of the SWRI and, as a Scottish delegate, attended conferences of the Associated Country Women of the World in Canada and Australia. She also represented the New South Wales Country Women of Australia on the Council of the ACWW for many years.
She was appointed MBE in 1962.

August Monday Evening Talk 2019

Ruth Boreham will be giving a talk about the Women’s Land Army.

“The land army fights in the fields. It is in the fields of Britain that the most critical battle of the present war may well be fought and won”.

During the Second World War over 8000 women worked in the Women’s Land Army in Scotland, working in the fields and the forests to ensure the country had food and timber supply to keep going. The Women’s Land Army played a fundamental role in the war. However, as soon as the WLA was disbanded in 1950 they became the forgotten army. No daring heroics to leave in the records, just much needed work. Ruth Boreham has interviewed some who spent their late teenage years and early twenties in brown and green uniform and will share their stories in this fascinating talk.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served following the talk. Our talks are free but a donation of £3 towards the museum would be very much appreciated.

Fife Folk Museum sampler

September

& October

Fife Folk Museum

“Lest we Forget – 100 years on” An exhibition of samplers and other WW1 memorabilia

The sampler shown here, from the Fife Folk Museum’s fine collection of samplers, was made for his mother by a soldier serving in the Fife & Forfar Yeomanry. It features a knight on horse-back, the ‘Thane of Fife’, with the dates of battles fought in the Boer War in South Africa, 1900-02, and, in the First World War, Gallipoli 1915, and Egypt 1916, and the inscription ‘From Jim to Mother’. Here at the Museum, we do not know who ‘Jim’ was, or his mother.

In 2017, with this exhibition in mind, the FFM Trust applied to AIM (Association of Independent Museums) for funding to have the then fragile sampler restored and framed. The bid was successful and the sampler has been beautifully restored by The Scottish Conservation Studio (Hopetoun House, West Lothian).

Come and see the “Lest we forget – 100 years on” exhibition which features samplers created by soldiers in rehabilitation and other artefacts along with memorabilia from WW1 belonging to Dairsie lad William Henderson .

Whisky Tasting Evening

Join us for a tasting of a selection of malt whiskies with Iain Robertson at 7pm on Saturday the 16th June at Fife Folk Museum’s visitor centre. Iain previously ran the connoisseurs tours at the Whisky Experience in Edinburgh and is now a distiller at the new Raasay distillery on the Isle of Raasay. In 2020 the Raasay distillery will release the first Isle of Raasay Single Malt Scotch Whisky in history.

As well as the whisky tasting, there will be a raffle and a silent auction featuring a list of some very interesting whiskies to help raise funds for the museum. Museum Evening Talks 2018

A change of venue for the next Evening Talk on Monday 4th June at 7pm at Ceres Memorial Hall. Professor Ian Bradley will give a talk entitled “Murder Along the Pilgrim Way”.

Professor Ian Bradley will describe the background to perhaps the most notorious event to happen on the old pilgrimage route to St Andrews - the murder of Archbishop Sharp at Magus Muir on 3 February 1679. Although the new Fife Pilgrim Way route runs just a mile or so south of the scene of the crime, the story behind it involves several key places along it, notably Kennoway, Struthers Castle and Ceres. This talk will focus on the Covenanters, the troubled religious history of Scotland in the seventeenth century and Sharp's career and the reasons for his unpopularity.

Educated at the Universities of Oxford (BA, MA, DPhil) and St Andrews (BD), Ian Bradley is Emeritus Professor of Cultural and Spiritual History at the University of St Andrews. He is the author of more than 40 books on a variety of historical, theological, political and musical subjects and is a regular broadcaster and contributor to national newspapers.

Note that this talk is being given in partnership with the Fife Pilgrim Way. All welcome. Tea and biscuits will be served after the talk. Free entry but a donation of £2 towards the museum and the refreshments would be much appreciated.
